Steering Wheel Cover Sizing Guide
The short answer
- Freightliner Cascadia, M2 and Columbia — 18 inches. So are the Kenworth T680 and T880, Peterbilt 579 and 567, Volvo VNL and VNR, Mack Anthem and Pinnacle, and International LT and ProStar. Effectively every Class 8 cab on the road.
- Cars, SUVs and crossovers — 14.5 to 15 inches. That has been the norm for twenty-five years.
If you drive a semi, the size you need is 18 inch — see the 18 inch cover, 10 colours. If you drive a car, measure first and check whether your rim is round or flat-bottomed, because that decides the cover as much as the diameter does. The rest of this page shows you how, and lists sizes by model.
Choosing the right steering wheel cover comes down to two things: the outer diameter of your wheel in inches, and whether the bottom of the rim is round or flat. Get both right and the cover sits tight and stays put. Get either wrong and it slips or bunches.
Are all steering wheels the same size?
No — but they cluster tightly into two groups, which is why cover sizing looks simpler than it is.
- Passenger vehicles — cars, SUVs, crossovers and light trucks almost all sit between 14.5 and 15 inches.
- Class 8 trucks — semi tractors run a much larger wheel, standardly 18 inches, because a heavier wheel gives better leverage on an air-assisted box.
The gap between those two groups is the reason a car cover will never work on a big rig and vice versa.
What is the average steering wheel size?
For a modern US passenger car, about 14.5 to 15 inches in outer diameter. That has been the norm for roughly twenty-five years. Vehicles built before 2000 frequently ran larger — 16 to 17 inches was common — and classic cars larger still. Heavy-duty pickups and commercial vans occasionally run bigger than 15 inches too.
For a Class 8 semi truck, the average is 18 inches.
How to measure your steering wheel
A tape measure and thirty seconds.
- Park, and turn the wheel so the spokes sit level
- Measure straight across the wheel from outer edge to outer edge — the full diameter, not across the spokes
- Round to the nearest half-inch
- Now look at the bottom of the rim: is it a continuous curve, or is there a straight flat section?
If you're between sizes, size down. A slightly tight cover beds in. A loose one slips, and a slipping cover is worse than no cover.
D-shape or round — and why it matters
A D-shape (or flat-bottom) wheel has a straight section across the bottom of the rim. It's fitted to sport and performance trims — Camaro, Corvette, Mustang, Civic Type R and Si, Golf GTI and R, and the sportier trim levels of many other models.
A round wheel is a continuous circle, and it is still what most ordinary sedans, SUVs and crossovers ship with.
The two are not interchangeable. A round cover on a D-shape wheel leaves the flat section proud and wrinkled. A D-shape cover on a round wheel leaves slack at the bottom — exactly where your hands rest at the six o'clock position.
What we currently stock: our 15 inch car cover is cut for D-shape, flat-bottom wheels. We do not have a 15 inch round cover on the store right now. If your car wheel is round, that cover is not the right product for you — we'd rather tell you than sell you one that won't sit properly.

Trim level is what usually decides rim shape, not the model name — which is why the table gives a likely answer and not a guarantee. Measure and look at your own wheel. Thirty seconds beats any chart on the internet, this one included.
What if your wheel isn't standard?
If you've fitted an aftermarket wheel, measure before ordering anything. Aftermarket racing wheels are commonly 13–14 inches, and we don't make a cover that small. Pre-2000 vehicles and classics often run 16–17 inches, which we also don't cover. If that's you, tell us the size — it helps us decide what to make next.
